The goal-line technology made it’s debut at the 2010 FIFA World Cup in Brazil along with the vanishing spray used by the referees to mark out exact spot to place the ball for spot-kicks.

Over the years, many matches have been marred by poor officiating, maybe due to the inability of the referee and the assistants to determine what is right, in terms of whether the ball crossed the goal or not. The affected teams, whose goals were denied have complained bitterly to the world football governing body; FIFA for some years but without success.

What Led to The Adoption of the Goal-Line Technology?

One of the major incidents that led to the adoption of the goal-line technology  is the England national team match in 2010 where Frank Lampard  goal was denied, although the ball crossed the goal-line, following a video evidence replayed to the viewers. This and many other incidences has dominated discussions and the perception of the typical goal-line incident. In recent years, there have been many more such situations. However, there has come a respite for everyone football team and that is the football technology innovation known as The Goal-Line Technology.

What is Goal-Line Technology?

The Goal-line technology  refers to a means of automatically knowing and determining that the ball shot at goal has crossed the goal line. It is a way of using technology to judge if the football actually went past the goal line.

Scientifically, when the circuit in the ball crosses the goal line, the electromagnetic field changes, and the computer automatically notifies the referee, again by a radio signal transmitted to his or her watch, says

How Does the Goal-Line Technology Work?

According to FIFA, match officials alone receive signals on their watches to know whether the whole of the ball has crossed the goal line. This is so that the the game is not unnecessarily interrupted. Replays can be done if the match organizer wants to do a replay, otherwise, it may not be necessary.

Within few seconds, information is sent to the officials including the referee, which responds appropriately and timely to the situation. There is no stoppage of time any other other interruption to the game.

Technologies Involved in the Goal-Line Technology

According to FIFA website, the following are the technologies involved in the Goal-Line Technology tool, used in football matches. They include:

  • Camera-based:

A lot of approved systems work with cameras that detect the ball and use software to evaluate the footage from all the cameras. In this way, the system can determine whether the whole of the ball has crossed the goal line. Currently licensed systems work with seven cameras per goal installed as high up as possible within the stadium structure.

  • Magnetic fields:

A lot of systems operate with magnetic fields. For these systems, cables are placed underground and around the goal, and the ball has elements of the technology inside. The interaction between the receptors in the ball and the magnetic fields created through the underground cables allow the software to calculate the exact position of the ball and determine when a goal has been scored.

  2. UEFA Champions League
  3. English Premier League
