Without much ado, here are the Key Settings and Changes to make to your blog /website after installing WordPress.

  1. Change Your Display (Article Writer’s)Name

Your Username and Password must be confidential! Your Username must not be same as your WordPress Display name (This is the name that appears on top or below each post you make). Therefore, you should quickly change your WordPress display name to something different to your Username.

This is because WordPress platform and some WordPress Themes use your Username as the Poster Display Name and that makes the security of your blog open and vulnerable to spam and attacks. Many careless bloggers fail to recognize this particular loophole. Therefore, select a totally different name (Local Name) for your Display, as a replacement for Username. Simply put, your Username must be different to your Display Name, for the sake of security of your blog.

In order to modify your display name in WordPress, do the following:

  1. From the Dashboard, Go to “Users”
  2. Select “Your Profile Name”.
  3. In the “display your name publicly as” field which is occupied by the first name, last name, and nickname fields, Type in a Different Name into one of those fields.
  4. Click “Save Changes”

  1. Put Your Preferred Domain URL

How do you want search engines to access your blog or sites – www.yourblogname.com or just yourblogname.com? Set your choice of domain URL quickly. You need to specify that because; search engines take blogs with www and those without www as 2 different blogs.

In order to specifically choose your preferred Domain URL, do the following:

  1. From the Dashboard, Go to “Settings”.
  2. Select “General” and choose your preferred Domain URL in WordPress Address site.
  3. Click “Save Changes”

As soon as you make this setting to your URL, make sure that you abide by it.

  1. Change Site Title, Tagline and Time Zone

I’d like you to note that Permalink refers to the link address of posts and pages on your blogs and websites. For instance, the default permalink format for my blog after my initial WordPress Installation was https://www.techmatas.com/?p=123. But this type of link description is not SEO friendly. I changed mine and therefore, you’ll need to change your permalink format to your Post or Page name.

In order to Change Your Permalink Format, do the following:

  1. From the WordPress Dashboard, Go to “Settings”.
  2. Select “ %post name” at the permalink option.
  3. Click “Save Changes”

  1. Remove Sample Post and Sample Page

By default, WordPress themes come with sample post and pages which shows you how things look when you publish online. That page and post aren’t necessary and so, you have got to take them out immediately. This is because, they are not part of your blog/ website and you don’t want visitors to see that on your blog.

In order to Delete Sample Post and Page from your blog, do the following:

  1. From your WordPress Dashboard, Go to “Post”
  2. Select “All Post” to display the WordPress default post
  3. Check mark that unwanted post and
  4. Click “Delete”

When you put Categories in your blog, your blog readers are able to see all classes of posts that you have written on your blog. In fact, a category gives your blog visitors the best of User-Experience. Every WordPress theme come loaded with a category tool and you will modify default category list and create new ones based on the content of your blog.

In order to Add Categories to your blog, do the following:

  1. From your WordPress Dashboard, Go to “Post”
  2. Select “Categories” to display the categories window
  3. Then “Add New” categories or “Edit” existing category names.
  4. Click “Save”

In fact, disable it now.

  1. From you WordPress Dashboard, select “Settings”.
  2. Select “General”.
  3. Disable User Registration
  4. Save Changes.

To make your blog look professional, select a very beautiful and professional theme to match your type of niche. In order to choose an Attractive Theme for your blog, do the following:

  1. From the WordPress Dashboard, Select “Appearance”
  2. Choose “themes”
  3. Then “Upload or “Add New theme” of your choice. Use the search area to find available themes on the WordPress.

 

  1. Change Media Settings

Your media settings allow WordPress to manage the sizes of images and photos you upload. In fact, presents 3 sizes of images when you upload an image by producing large size, medium size, and thumbnail size.
